NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. – A severe chain-reaction accident on Interstate 95 in Northwest Miami-Dade resulted in a fuel tanker overturning, spilling thousands of gallons of fuel across the highway and forcing the closure of all southbound lanes between 103rd and 125th streets, authorities reported.

The incident unfolded just before 12:30 p.m. near the Northwest 119th Street exit. Drivers caught in the extensive traffic jam quickly took out their phones to capture video footage of the chaos, including the flipped tractor-trailer, which became a central focus of social media posts.

One video posted online featured a man jokingly saying, “Ground zero for the zombie apocalypse is here in Miami,” as the massive traffic snarl continued to worsen.

Details of the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the accident began when a red pickup truck and a silver Lexus sedan collided. The impact caused the Lexus to crash into the fuel tanker, resulting in both vehicles overturning. The tanker was reported to be carrying a significant load of 8,000 gallons of fuel at the time of the crash, creating a dangerous situation on the highway.

Cellphone footage from the scene showed the aftermath, with the silver Lexus nearly crushed and other damaged vehicles scattered across the road. FHP quickly shut down all southbound lanes between Northwest 103rd and 125th streets to manage the situation.

Fuel tanker accidents present a unique set of dangers to motorists and first responders:

  • Explosion Risk: The presence of large quantities of flammable fuel increases the risk of explosions, especially if there’s a fire or spark near the spill.
  • Environmental Hazards: Spilled fuel can seep into nearby waterways or soil, causing long-term environmental damage.
  • Traffic Hazards: The slick, fuel-covered road surfaces can lead to secondary accidents as other vehicles lose traction.
  • Health Risks: Inhaling fuel vapors can be harmful to those in the immediate area, especially if cleanup takes several hours.

Response and Cleanup

Traffic cameras showed miles of vehicles backed up, while Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) crews, along with dozens of law enforcement officers, worked tirelessly to manage the scene. Video footage also captured frustrated drivers leaving their cars and some even driving in reverse on entrance ramps in a desperate attempt to escape the gridlock.

Fortunately, those involved in the crash only sustained minor injuries. However, the cleanup process was extensive. By 5 p.m., a road ranger on the scene told a local news source that it would take at least four to five more hours to clear the fuel spill.

As of 11 p.m., the tanker had been up righted but was still on the highway. Authorities advised drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes until the cleanup was complete.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with tanker accidents and the critical importance of road safety measures to prevent such occurrences. (main news source: 7News)
