Fatal Fire in Medley: Two Dead, Five Injured in Vehicle Blaze
Officials and authorities are looking into the cause of a yard fire in Medley that resulted in 2 deceased and at least 5 suffering personal injuries
MEDLEY, FLA. – two people suffered fatal injuries and five others experienced serious bodily harm due to a fire that broke out in Medley.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) were the first to respond to where a fire broke out at before 9 in the morning at 11350 NW South River Drive. The intensity of the blaze was so extreme that the fire was visible from parts of Broward County.
“It was a very hazardous scenario,” said Danny Cardeso with MDFR. “You had multiple vehicles burning with flammables. You had multiple power lines down. That coupled with five people in total needing rescue or needing care was a very challenging scene.”
The fire involved several vehicles, with one of the vehicle being a truck that was transporting fuel. According to sources at the scene and preliminary reports from investigators, a spark caused a fire to break out as welders were using acetylene to carry out their tasks.
Once fire officials controlled the flames, video footage showed a truck half burned.
“They were working on some heavy machinery,” said Luis Sierra with the MDPD. “We don’t know if they are workers or not. Sadly, two lives were lost today in this incident and another two are critical.”
Two people were confirmed dead on the scene. One victim was airlifted and another was transported by ground to Ryder Trauma Center; both are in critical condition. A fourth victim was transported to Palmetto General Hospital for minor burns. The condition of the other two victims is unknown.
Local authorities had to close off roadways in order for fire units to put out the fire. Power lines were downed as a result of the blaze and Florida Power and Light arrived to the scene. Investigators at the Miami-Dade Police Homicide department, together with the arson investigative team, were present at the scene following the blaze to carry out the investigation for find out what caused the fire.
