Miami Gardens: The victims of a devastating fire that destroyed around half of a Miami Gardens apartment building are taking legal action, filing a class action lawsuit in Miami-Dade circuit court. Over 200 families are named in the lawsuit, claiming that negligence by those responsible for the community contributed to the disaster. Attorney Yolanda Strader, who is representing the plaintiffs, alleges failures to address fire code violations, secure proper fire insurance, and maintain a suitable fire system. The building had not received its 40-year recertification and had been without insurance since November 2021, despite the fire occurring in late January. The lawsuit seeks damages of over $8.6 million and aims to ensure the victims’ stories are not ignored or forgotten.
