Fatal Crash on Florida Turnpike Accident

LAKE COUNTY: Following a fatal motor vehicle collision in Lake County, Florida, the Florida Turnpike has resumed normal operation. The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Friday when a woman experienced fatal injuries after being involved in a two-vehicle crash upon the southbound lanes of the Turnpike near State Road 19 in Howey-in-the-Hills.

As a result, the southbound lanes were temporarily blocked-off to traffic, causing drivers to be redirected onto U.S. 27 south. From there, motorists were instructed to take State Road 50 east to return to the Turnpike and resume their trajectory.

In a recent update, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) announced that the southbound lanes of the Turnpike have been reopened, but the on-ramp from U.S. 27 to the Turnpike remained inaccessible. According to FHP, the woman, driving a 2003 Buick Century, was rear-ended by a 2018 Kia Sorento driven by a 39-year-old man from Orlando. The driver failed to notice the Buick slowing down in front of him. Tragically, the woman was pronounced dead at the accident site. This type of rear-end accident has become among the most common given that motorists are apparently not paying attention to traffic ahead due to being distracted by negligent cellphone use.

The male driver sustained suffered severe bodily harm and was transported to South Lake Hospital, where he is currently in stable condition, as confirmed by troopers.
