In Baltimore, a section of the Francis Scott Key Bridge crumbled following a collision with a substantial container ship during the wee hours of Tuesday morning. This event led to numerous vehicles and individuals being plunged into the chilly waters below.
The collapse occurred when the cargo vessel collided with one of the bridge supports around 1:30 a.m., causing it to fracture and warp. Consequently, several vehicles plummeted into the Patapsco River as the roadway above disintegrated due to the force of the impact. Furthermore, the vessel sparked a blaze upon striking the support, releasing dense black smoke into the atmosphere.
Sonar readings indicate that multiple vehicles are submerged in the water, where temperatures linger around 47 degrees Fahrenheit. At a press briefing near the bridge, Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace reported the successful rescue of two individuals, but several others are believed to remain in the water. Estimates of the missing persons fluctuated between seven and twenty, prompting Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott to describe the situation as “an unimaginable tragedy.”
Baltimore Fire Department’s communications director, Kevin Cartwright, characterized the incident as a “grave emergency,” underscoring ongoing efforts to rescue and recover those affected. He described the collapse as an “evolving mass casualty event” and identified the ship involved as the “Dali.”
According to data from Marine Traffic and Vessel Finder, the Dali was en route from Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, and was operating under a Singaporean flag. The vessel measures approximately 985 feet in length and 157 feet in width.
Regarding the causes behind ship collisions with bridges, several variables could be at play, including navigational blunders, adverse weather conditions, mechanical glitches, or miscommunication between the vessel and bridge operators. Additionally, issues related to visibility, currents, or unexpected obstacles in the waterway could contribute to such mishaps.
