COSMETIC SURGERY LEADS TO DEATH

A woman that entered a Miami clinic to undergo cosmetic surgery died after being rushed to a local hospital.  Danea Plasencia, a 28-year old mother of three young children, passed away at Baptist Hospital for reasons under investigation by the Miami-Dade Police homicide department. Plasencia, who according to family members suffered cardiac arrest, was in perfect health upon entering the clinic this past Friday morning. Her grandfather, a medical practitioner in Hialeah, had intended to convince her against having the cosmetic surgery performed. Sadly, he was unaware of when she was scheduled to enter MIA Aesthetics, located at 9300 NW 72nd St. for the cosmetic surgery. Her grandfather, who openly stated his disapproval for this type of surgery, claims that women are lured into low cost surgical procedures by plastic surgeons offering discounts on cash payments, adding that these types of clinics most often carry no medical insurance with which to compensate victims in the event of negligence or medical malpractice. In response to the statements made by Plasencia’s grandfather to news crews responding to the incident, the clinic issued a statement that this fatal incident is the first of its kind in the thousands of surgical procedures carried out over the years. The clinic’s spokesperson added that’s its staff of surgeons is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and aimed at offering its cosmetic surgery patients the safest medical care possible. Nonetheless, the clinic spokesperson admitted to the risks involved with all serious surgical procedures, adding that the clinic will keep the public and its patients informed about  details as they emerge from the investigation that ensues. Meanwhile, family and friends of the victim, hope that cosmetic surgical clinics get the legal attention they deserve in order to prevent more deaths at the hands of low-cost cosmetic surgery clinics and negligent surgeons.

Cosmetic Surgery and Florida Law

The House of Representatives passed a bill earlier this month that holds clinics and healthcare professional, surgeons, and medical practitioners economically liability for compensation to patients that fall victim to medical malpractice. Furthermore, clinics would undergo yearly inspections by the Department of Health, which would be granted the legal right to suspend or take away the clinics operating license if irregularities that jeopardize the well-being of its patients are found. The law aims to enforce the regulations by which cosmetic surgeons and clinics abide. In a statement by the President of ASAP, Dr. Jeffrey E. Lanis, patients considering cosmetic surgery are advised to seek board-certified and skilled plastic surgeons.
