A devastating boat crash in the Florida Keys has reignited concerns over boating safety. Authorities allege that a charter fishing boat captain, under the influence of alcohol and drugs, crashed into a bridge, leaving several people injured, including an 11-year-old boy.
A 42 year-old man was operating a 35-foot Seahunter center console at approximately 1:30 a.m. on July 8 when it slammed into the South Pine Channel Bridge at a speed of 37 mph. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the crash caused significant injuries to Lewis and the seven passengers on board.
Chaos and Desperation in the Aftermath
The collision created a scene of panic and destruction. All eight individuals were either thrown from the vessel or trapped under debris. An FWC Investigator reported that first responders arrived to find the wreckage sinking, with victims in critical need of help.
Graphic body camera footage revealed the intense efforts of rescuers. Firefighters lifted the Captain, whose leg was nearly severed, off the boat. An 11-year-old boy suffered a broken leg and a brain bleed, while others endured broken bones, concussions, and other injuries.
Rescue teams struggled to evacuate the boy due to his severe pain. Eventually, a towboat carried the most seriously injured to Dolphin Marina, where medics transported them by helicopter to Miami-Dade County for emergency care.
Alcohol, Drugs, and Negligence
Investigators quickly identified substance use as a factor in the crash. Monroe County deputies found beer cans and a half-empty tequila bottle floating near the wreckage. A search also uncovered drug paraphernalia, including syringes and a synthetic opioid pill commonly prescribed for addiction treatment.
Blood tests conducted hours after the crash showed that he had a blood alcohol level of .05, below Florida’s legal limit of .08 for operating a vehicle or boat. However, witnesses stated that he had been drinking tequila shortly before the incident, leading investigators to estimate his blood alcohol level at the time of the crash ranged between .08 and .12.
Further testing revealed amphetamine and methamphetamine in his system. Lewis later admitted to injecting the synthetic opioid intravenously before the trip, though it was not prescribed for such use.

On January 13, Monroe County deputies arrested Lewis at his home in Big Pine Key. He faces multiple charges, including:
- Three felony counts of boating under the influence causing serious bodily injury
- One felony count of child neglect
- Misdemeanor reckless boating
- Aggravated boating under the influence with a minor
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
The accused posted a $195,000 bond and was released from custody. His legal representation has not been identified, and he has yet to comment on the charges.
