Volunteers expressed outrage over the incident, noting the severe threat to the sea turtles, which hatch and move toward the ocean during this season. Each nest typically holds between 50 to 80 hatchlings, but survival rates are very low, with only one in a thousand reaching adulthood.
While the extent of damage to the eggs remains uncertain, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will investigate. The driver is currently being held in a Broward County Jail on an immigration hold.
