Accidents at Intersections- Common Causes – Miami Car Accident Lawyer News

The Perazzo Law Firm

Intersection accidents are a common occurrence in South Florida, and they can result in serious injuries or even fatalities, especially when they involve left-hand turns, U-turns, crosswalks, and pedestrians. These types of accidents are often caused by driver negligence, such as failing to yield the right of way, driving while distracted, or disobeying traffic signals.

Left-hand turn accidents occur when a driver turns left at an intersection, often misjudging the distance and speed of oncoming traffic. U-turn accidents happen when a driver attempts to make a U-turn at an intersection or a nearby location, often without taking proper precautions. In both cases, pedestrians crossing the intersection can also be at risk of being hit by a turning or U-turning vehicle.

Crosswalk accidents can also be devastating for pedestrians. Pedestrians have the right of way when crossing the street in a marked crosswalk, but many drivers fail to yield, resulting in severe injuries or death. Pedestrians may also be at risk when drivers fail to stop at red lights or stop signs, or when they speed through intersections.

A fatality occurred as a result of a shooting incident in Fort Lauderdale, leading to a subsequent collision at a busy intersection. Authorities from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department responded to a notification from ShotSpotter in the 1500 block of Northwest Third Court. Evidence at the scene indicated that a shooting had taken place.

A local resident in the vicinity reported hearing approximately five gunshots in quick succession. Shortly thereafter, around 1:30 a.m., a collision transpired at the crossing of Broward Boulevard and Seventh Avenue. An employee at a gas station recounted hearing a loud impact while attending to a customer and bore witness to the crash.

It was revealed that the victim’s girlfriend had been attempting to rush him to Broward Health Medical Center when the collision occurred. The victim, an adult male, was transported to the hospital, but sadly succumbed to his injuries.

The area was cordoned off by the police, who maintained a presence until nearly 5 a.m. Visual evidence from the scene depicted a severely damaged vehicle with activated airbags and bullet holes in the windshield.

A second vehicle involved in the collision veered into the bushes and ultimately came to rest in the parking lot of a Walgreens store. Law enforcement officers worked extensively to ascertain the details of the incident, blocking off the intersection and capturing photographic evidence.

Footage captured by news cameras revealed a fallen tree and skid marks on the pavement. Presently, no arrests have been reported in connection with the incident. (News source: 7News Miami)

  • Running Red Lights or Stop Signs: Drivers ignoring traffic signals contribute to intersection collisions.
  • Distracted Driving: Engaging with phones or other distractions diverts attention from the road.
  • Speeding: Excessive speeds hinder the ability to react to changing traffic conditions.
  • Failure to Yield: Not giving right-of-way leads to collisions, especially when turning.
  • Impaired Driving: Alcohol or drugs impair judgment and reflexes, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
  • Unsafe Lane Changes: Abrupt lane changes without proper signaling can cause collisions.
  • Weather Conditions: Poor weather reduces visibility and traction, leading to accidents.
  • Inadequate Signage or Road Design: Confusing or poorly designed intersections contribute to accidents.
  • Tailgating: Following too closely results in rear-end collisions, especially at intersections.
  • Misjudging Speed of Oncoming Traffic: Incorrectly assessing the speed of other vehicles can lead to accidents.

Approaching and waiting at intersections demands utmost caution for both drivers and pedestrians. These crucial crossroads are hotspots for potential accidents, requiring heightened awareness and adherence to safety measures.

Drivers: When approaching an intersection, reduce speed and be prepared to stop. Always obey traffic signals and signs, yielding the right-of-way when required. Look in all directions for approaching vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists. Maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you to allow for sudden stops. Avoid distractions, such as texting or adjusting the radio, to stay fully focused on the road and surrounding environment. Before making a turn, ensure that the path is clear of oncoming traffic, pedestrians, or cyclists. Use turn signals to communicate your intentions to others on the road.

Pedestrians: When waiting to cross at an intersection, stand on the sidewalk and away from the edge of the road. Observe traffic signals and wait for the pedestrian signal to cross safely. Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you before stepping onto the road. Be cautious of turning vehicles that might not notice you while making their turns. Avoid distractions, such as using your phone, and focus on your surroundings. Walk briskly and directly across the street, and stay alert for any unexpected actions from drivers.

By exercising caution and being considerate of others at intersections, we can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and ensure the safety of all road users.

If you’ve been involved in an intersection accident, it’s important to seek legal help as soon as possible to protect your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
