FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – A dramatic rescue unfolded early Monday morning after a vehicle veered off the roadway and plunged into the New River, leaving a man trapped underwater and fighting for his life.
MIAMI CAR ACCIDENT LAWYER – YOUR ALLY AFTER AN ACCIDENT
According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 2:15 a.m. after receiving reports of a vehicle floating in the river near the SW 4th Avenue and Avenue of the Arts drawbridge, a well-traveled area near downtown Fort Lauderdale.
When firefighters arrived, they faced immediate challenges. The vehicle was no longer visible from the river’s surface, complicating initial rescue efforts. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, specially trained divers from the rescue team were deployed into the dark, murky waters.
Within moments of diving, crews located the submerged car and found a man trapped inside. Rescuers swiftly extricated him from the vehicle and brought him to the surface, where life-saving measures began immediately. Paramedics performed CPR while rushing the man to Broward Health Medical Center. His current medical condition has not yet been made public.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim, pending notification of family members.
The incident is now under active investigation by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, who are working to determine the cause of the crash. Investigators have not confirmed whether speed, impairment, or mechanical failure may have contributed to the accident.
Dangerous Conditions at Night
Driving near drawbridges and waterways presents unique risks, especially during overnight hours when visibility is reduced. Fort Lauderdale’s waterways, while beautiful, can become hazardous when barriers are missed or when accidents occur.
First responders are reminding drivers to exercise extra caution when navigating near bodies of water, particularly at night:
- Stay alert and reduce speed near bridges and waterfront areas.
- Watch for signage and barriers, which can sometimes be difficult to see in low light.
- Avoid distractions inside the vehicle, as even a brief lapse in attention can have devastating consequences.
- Do not drive impaired, as alcohol and other substances can severely affect depth perception, judgment, and reaction time.
A City Familiar With Water Rescues
Fort Lauderdale, often referred to as the “Venice of America” due to its expansive network of canals and rivers, is no stranger to water-related emergencies. However, incidents involving submerged vehicles are relatively rare and typically require highly specialized rescue operations.
Thanks to the quick response and training of Fort Lauderdale’s Fire Rescue dive teams, the man was pulled from the water within a critical time frame — though the outcome remains uncertain.
Ongoing Investigation
The area around the drawbridge was temporarily closed to traffic while authorities conducted their preliminary investigation. It remains unclear whether the vehicle struck any barriers before entering the water, or if other factors such as roadway conditions played a role.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about the events leading up to it to come forward and contact the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.
Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
