Three Miramar High School students were hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle while walking through the intersection of Miramar Parkway and Douglas Road, highlighting the dangers pedestrians can face at busy South Florida intersections.
According to Miramar Police, the girls, ages 15, 16, and 17, were walking in a marked crosswalk shortly after 6 a.m. when the driver of a Dodge Challenger attempted to make a left turn and struck them.
Two of the students reportedly suffered no significant injuries and were listed in stable condition. The third student sustained more serious injuries and remained under medical care. Police said the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Investigators are still working to determine who had the right of way at the time of the crash. The driver reportedly told police that he had a green traffic light, while the students said they had the pedestrian crossing signal.
Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage, traffic-signal timing, roadway measurements, and other evidence as part of the investigation.
Pedestrian Accidents at Miami-Area Intersections
Pedestrian crashes frequently occur at intersections where vehicles are turning across marked crosswalks. Drivers making left-hand turns may be focused on approaching traffic and fail to notice pedestrians who have entered the roadway.
When a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle, determining fault may require a detailed review of traffic-camera footage, signal timing, witness statements, police reports, vehicle damage, and other evidence.

Intersection Accidents at Miramar Parkway and Douglas Road
The crash highlights the risks pedestrians face at large intersections where several lanes of traffic, turning vehicles, crosswalks, and traffic signals converge.
Left-turn accidents are particularly dangerous for pedestrians. A driver may be watching approaching traffic while simultaneously entering a crosswalk where pedestrians have begun crossing.
Miramar Parkway and Douglas Road has also appeared in historical City of Miramar crash data. An older city transportation analysis using 1999 police data ranked Miramar Parkway at Douglas Road second among the signalized intersections studied, behind Miramar Parkway and University Drive. Because that information is historical, it should not be interpreted as a current ranking of Miramar’s most dangerous intersections.
Miramar Intersections and Corridors With Pedestrian Safety Concerns
Miramar Parkway continues to receive attention from local transportation planners.
A Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization pedestrian and bicycle analysis covering 2015 through 2021 examined a western section of Miramar Parkway near SW 160th Avenue and SW 172nd Avenue. The study identified 11 bicycle or pedestrian crashes in the study area, 10 of which resulted in injuries. The largest concentration occurred near Miramar Parkway and SW 172nd Avenue.
The Broward MPO has also developed improvements for a one-mile section of Miramar Parkway between SW 172nd Avenue and Dykes Road with the stated goal of improving pedestrian and bicycle safety and reducing fatalities and serious injuries.
These findings do not mean every accident occurs because an intersection is improperly designed. Driver attention, turning movements, visibility, traffic signals, pedestrian behavior, and time of day can all contribute to an intersection crash.
