Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-95 at 79th Street

Northbound lanes on Interstate 95 at 79th Street in Miami have officially reopened after being shut down due to a serious multi-vehicle crash late Monday morning. According to the Florida Highway Patrol and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, the incident involved at least six vehicles, one of which overturned and came to rest on its side. The collision caused major gridlock, with traffic backed up to the 112 Airport Expressway and delays stretching as long as 45 minutes. At this time, authorities have not confirmed the number or extent of injuries, and the cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Understanding Multi-Vehicle Accidents

Multi-vehicle accidents, often referred to as “pile-ups,” are among the most dangerous types of roadway incidents because of the chain-reaction effect. When one car suddenly slows or stops, vehicles behind may have little time to react, especially at highway speeds. The risks increase when visibility is reduced, drivers are distracted, or traffic is heavy. Vehicles can be struck multiple times from different directions, leading to more severe injuries and extensive property damage than in single-car or two-car crashes.

What to Do If You Encounter a Collision Ahead

If you’re traveling on a highway like I-95 and notice signs of a crash up ahead, staying calm and taking quick, safe action is critical:

  1. Stay Alert and Look Ahead
Keep your eyes scanning the road well beyond the vehicle in front of you. Brake lights, flashing hazard lights, or dust/debris may be the first signs of a collision zone.
  2. Slow Down Gradually
Do not slam on your brakes, as this could cause you to be rear-ended. Ease off the accelerator and apply steady braking while keeping control of your vehicle.
  3. Maintain Safe Following Distance
Increase the space between you and the car in front. This buffer allows for extra stopping room if traffic suddenly halts.
  4. Use Your Hazard Lights
Alert drivers behind you by turning on your flashers, especially if traffic is coming to a stop. This gives others more time to react.
  5. Avoid Sudden Lane Changes
Weaving through traffic to get ahead can increase the risk of being involved in the crash or causing another one. Only change lanes if it’s safe and necessary.
  6. Follow Emergency Instructions
If first responders are on the scene, obey their signals and do not attempt to drive through blocked lanes until they reopen the roadway.
