Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving Police Cruiser Causes Major Delays on Palmetto Expressway

DORAL, FLA. – A multi-vehicle crash, including a Sunny Isles Beach police cruiser, has led to significant traffic delays on State Road 826, also known as the Palmetto Expressway, for Monday morning commuters. The collision occurred around 6 a.m. in the southbound lanes just before Northwest 25th Street, resulting in the closure of five lanes. Around 7:10 a.m., authorities and emergency vehicles were working to clear the roads and open at least one lane to allow traffic to pass. However, the express lanes remain closed. The delays are extensive, with traffic backed up to Interstate 75. Drivers are advised to use Northwest 87th Avenue as an alternate route. One person was transported to Kendall Trauma Center, but their condition is currently unknown. Authorities are actively working to clear the scene.

What to Do in the Event of a Multi-Vehicle Crash on a Highway

If You Are Involved in the Crash

  1. Stay Calm and Assess the Situation:
    • Check yourself and passengers for injuries.
    • If it is safe, move your vehicle to the shoulder or a safe location to prevent further accidents.
    • Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers.
  2. Call Emergency Services:
    • Dial 911 to report the accident. Provide them with your location, the number of vehicles involved, and if there are any injuries.
    • Follow their instructions and answer their questions as accurately as possible.
  3. Stay Inside the Vehicle:
    • Unless there is an immediate danger (like a fire), it’s usually safer to stay inside your vehicle with your seatbelt fastened.
    • If you need to exit, do so cautiously and stay away from traffic.
  4. Exchange Information:
    • Exchange names, contact information, insurance details, and vehicle registration numbers with the other drivers involved.
    • Avoid discussing fault or making statements about the accident.
  5. Document the Scene:
    • Take photos of the damage, the positions of the vehicles, and the surrounding area.
    • Write down the details of the accident while they are fresh in your mind, including weather and road conditions.
  6. Notify Your Insurance Company:
    • Report the accident to your insurance company as soon as possible.
    • Provide them with the information and documentation you have gathered.

If You Spot an Accident Up Ahead in Traffic

  1. Slow Down and Stay Alert:
    • Reduce your speed gradually and keep a safe distance from the vehicles in front of you.
    • Turn on your hazard lights to alert drivers behind you of the slowdown.
  2. Follow Instructions from Emergency Personnel:
    • If emergency personnel are on the scene, follow their directions carefully.
    • Do not try to move around the accident site unless instructed.
  3. Avoid Distractions:
    • Stay focused on the road and avoid distractions like using your phone or rubbernecking.
  4. Stay in Your Lane:
    • Do not change lanes unless directed to do so by authorities or traffic signs.
    • Abrupt lane changes can cause additional accidents.
  5. Use Alternative Routes:
    • If you are aware of the accident in advance and it is causing significant delays, consider using alternative routes to reach your destination.
    • Traffic apps and GPS systems can provide real-time updates and suggest detours.
  6. Be Patient:
    • Understand that traffic may move slowly, and it might take time for the scene to be cleared.
    • Keep calm and patient to ensure your safety and the safety of others.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure your safety and the safety of others in the event of a multi-vehicle crash on a highway.
