SR 836 to Close Nightly Through May 16 for Overhead Construction—What Miami Drivers Need to Know

MIAMI – Major nighttime lane closures are set to impact one of Miami’s busiest expressways, as construction crews continue working on the I-395/SR 836/I-95 Design-Build Project, which includes building a new double-decked roadway to improve traffic flow through the heart of the city.

Starting Thursday, both eastbound and westbound lanes of SR 836 (Dolphin Expressway) will be closed nightly between NW 12th Avenue and NW 17th Avenue from 10:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., continuing through Friday, May 16.

🚧 What’s Going On?

The closures are part of a large-scale infrastructure upgrade aimed at modernizing key traffic corridors in downtown Miami. The work includes installing new overhead structures and improving connectivity between I-395, I-95, and State Road 836.

Given SR 836’s role as a vital east-west connector for commuters heading to and from Miami International Airport, Downtown, Doral, Coral Gables, and the Port of Miami, delays and congestion are expected during the closure period.

🔁 Alternate Routes During SR 836 Nightly Closures

Motorists should prepare for detours and heavier traffic, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours. Here’s how to navigate around the closures:

Eastbound SR 836:

  • Exit at NW 17th Avenue
  • Continue southbound across NW 7th Street
  • Turn left on SW 1st Street and head east
  • Turn right on South Miami Avenue
  • Access I-95 north or south from South Miami Avenue ramp

Heading to Biscayne Blvd & MacArthur Causeway:

  • Continue east on SW 1st Street
  • Turn left on Biscayne Boulevard
  • Take the ramp at NE 11th Terrace to connect to MacArthur Causeway

🚗 Additional Alternate Routes to Consider

To avoid congestion entirely, drivers can use:

  • US-41 (SW 8th Street) for east-west travel through Little Havana and Brickell
  • Flagler Street as an alternative to reach downtown from west Miami
  • LeJeune Road (NW 42nd Ave) to bypass central traffic and access MIA
  • I-195 (Julia Tuttle Causeway) for travel between Midtown and Miami Beach

⚠️ Safety and Legal Reminder

These detours can lead to unexpected traffic patterns, sudden lane changes, and an increased risk of car accidents, especially in poorly lit or unfamiliar areas. If you’re involved in a crash during this period, don’t delay—speak with a Car Accident Lawyer in Miami immediately.
