NORTH BAY VILLAGE, FLA. – A 17-year-old’s reckless act turned North Bay Village into a scene of devastation, as police arrested the teenager in connection with a string of arson attacks that reduced vehicles to charred husks and left a home in ruins.
The fires erupted on the 7500 block of Mutiny Avenue, igniting shortly after 1:00 p.m. on Feb. 28. Flames engulfed three cars and a residence, causing destruction estimated in the tens of thousands of dollars, according to authorities.
The North Bay Village Police Department, in collaboration with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Arson Unit, launched a full-scale investigation, determined to track down the culprit.
Surveillance footage captured thick plumes of smoke twisting into the sky as sirens blared in the distance. Another clip, recorded by a neighbor, showcased the scorched remains of a newly renovated home—a stark contrast to what was once a place of comfort.
Detectives pieced together the puzzle through a meticulous neighborhood canvass and surveillance analysis, leading them to a high-rise apartment on South Treasure Drive, less than a mile from where the fires were set.
“Our detectives hit the ground running,” said Julie Leonardi with North Bay Village Police. “They distributed flyers, reviewed hours of footage, and connected the dots, ultimately handing crucial information over to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Arson Unit.”
Working alongside the building’s management, investigators zeroed in on the suspect, placing him under surveillance before making their move. Within hours of the blaze, the teenager was in handcuffs.
During questioning, police say the suspect confessed to setting all four fires, revealing that his rage over a school sports matter had led him down a dangerous path.
One neighbor recalled the moment he realized something was wrong.
“I smelled smoke—that unmistakable, gut-wrenching scent—and immediately rushed to my neighbor’s house,” he said. “I feel for the kid. He’s young, he made a stupid choice, but this one? This is going to haunt him.”
Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The juvenile now faces multiple counts of arson and burglary and has been transported to the Miami-Dade County Juvenile Assessment Center, where he awaits the legal consequences of his actions.
