Detours along 836 Eastbound and Westbound – Highway Safety Tips

Parts of both eastbound and westbound lanes on 836 will undergo detours during nightly hours this week. Commuters should be aware that starting Monday night, detours will be implemented on the 836.

The eastbound lanes, stretching from Northwest 17th Avenue to 12th Avenue, will be shut down between 11 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. For those traveling westbound, bridge maintenance will necessitate the closure of up to three lanes between Northwest 42nd Avenue to 57th Avenue during the same hours.

These detours will remain in place nightly until Thursday, operating from 11 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.

Safety in Light of Detours and Roadway Delays

Roadway detours and heavy traffic can significantly increase the risk of motor vehicle accidents, posing hazards to both drivers and pedestrians. Here are some potential scenarios where accidents may occur:

  1. Increased Congestion: Detours often redirect traffic onto unfamiliar routes or narrower roads, leading to congestion and slower-moving vehicles. This congestion can result in rear-end collisions as drivers may fail to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of them, especially when traffic suddenly slows or stops.
  2. Confusion and Distraction: Detour signs, road closures, and altered traffic patterns can confuse drivers, causing them to make sudden lane changes or maneuvers. This confusion can lead to side-swipe collisions or collisions with roadside barriers, especially if drivers are distracted by trying to navigate the unfamiliar route.
  3. Aggressive Driving: Frustration due to heavy traffic and delays may prompt some drivers to exhibit aggressive behaviors such as tailgating, speeding, or weaving in and out of lanes. These aggressive driving actions increase the likelihood of accidents, particularly on congested detour routes where space is limited.
  4. Pedestrian Safety Concerns: Heavy traffic and detours may necessitate pedestrians to navigate unfamiliar or less pedestrian-friendly routes. Pedestrians may be at risk of being struck by vehicles, especially if drivers are preoccupied with navigating the detour or are frustrated by traffic delays.
  5. Reduced Visibility: Detours often require temporary signage, barriers, and lane closures, which can obstruct drivers’ visibility of the road ahead and other vehicles. Reduced visibility increases the risk of accidents, particularly in areas with sharp turns, intersections, or merging lanes.
  6. Construction Zones: Detours are often implemented to facilitate road construction or maintenance activities. Construction zones pose additional hazards such as uneven road surfaces, loose debris, and workers present on or near the roadway. Failure to adhere to reduced speed limits or traffic control measures within construction zones can lead to accidents involving both vehicles and workers.

To mitigate the risk of accidents caused by roadway detours and heavy traffic, drivers should exercise caution, patience, and awareness while navigating unfamiliar routes. Adhering to posted speed limits, maintaining a safe following distance, and avoiding distractions are essential practices for safe driving in detour and heavy traffic conditions. Additionally, pedestrians should exercise caution and use designated crosswalks or pedestrian pathways when navigating areas affected by detours or heavy traffic.
